About Matthew

Matthew is an accomplished and enthusiastic music educator with over ten years of teaching experience and more than fifteen years of playing. He is excited to share his vast knowledge with students. Having honed his fundamentals of technique, musicianship, and theory during his Bachelor of Music at the University of Victoria (BMus ’22), Matthew is prepared to deliver well-rounded lessons built on a strong foundation of excellence.

How he teaches

Matthew’s teaching style is centered around writing music, exploring ideas with students, and drawing inspiration from the great musicians who shaped his own development. From Antonio Carlos Jobim to Jerry Garcia to Joe Dart of Vulfpeck, Matthew helps students conquer their favourite songs while unleashing their creativity.

What to expect

Matthew starts with a strong emphasis on the fundamentals—technique, musicianship, and theory - ensuring every student grows both artistically and confidently. Once students have some fluency they can expect a healthy amount of improvising, jamming, and creative experimentation.
