About Matthew
Matthew is a post-secondary student studying classical guitar at the University of Victoria. Classically trained on guitar, he also plays other instruments including piano, ukulele and bass. His experience extends to studio recording and songwriting, giving him a well-rounded musical background.
How he teaches
Matthew creates lessons that balance technique with creativity. Students work on building strong fundamentals while also exploring the styles and songs that inspire them most. His approach is encouraging, patient, and flexible—whether a student wants to pursue exams, learn casually, or develop performance skills.
Learning styles he supports
Visual learners benefit from clear notation and fretboard diagrams. Auditory learners practice through listening, repetition, and call-and-response. Kinesthetic learners engage through hands-on rhythm, movement, and exercises that connect sound to muscle memory. Matthew also supports beginner piano students with step-by-step introductions to keyboard geography, simple melodies, and basic chord patterns, making it easy to get started and build confidence at the piano.
Background
Matthew has been playing classical guitar since age 14 and has performed publicly ever since. He competed at the Performing Arts BC Provincial Festival (2018) for classical guitar and won 1st place in Contemporary Classical Voice at the 2018 Kiwanis Music Festival. Comfortable teaching all ages, he is excited to help students play the music they love.
