About Brian
Brian Whitman started playing piano at the age of five, taking his first lessons with his dad. Fifteen years later, music remains one of his greatest passions, alongside astronomy and reading the classics. He began teaching during high school, offering piano lessons to beginners of all ages - an experience that sparked his love for sharing music and helping others learn. Today, Brian continues his studies in composition and performance at the University of Victoria.
How he teaches
Brian brings patience and enthusiasm to every lesson. He believes students learn best when they feel encouraged, supported, and free to explore music they genuinely enjoy. Lessons emphasize building a strong foundation while keeping learning fun and rewarding. His approach helps students build both confidence and a lasting love of music.
Learning styles he supports
Visual learners benefit from clear notation, highlighted patterns, and written exercises. Auditory learners strengthen their skills through listening, imitation, and call-and-response. Kinesthetic learners engage with rhythm through clapping, tapping, and hands-on activities that connect movement to sound. Brian also specializes in helping beginners feel comfortable at the piano, starting with simple songs, strong technique, and confidence-building practice routines.
Background
Alongside his musical journey, Brian has been active in community outreach through a local astronomy club, where he worked with children and families. These experiences, combined with his early teaching background and current university studies, give him a unique perspective on how to make learning music engaging, approachable, and meaningful. He hopes to one day pursue graduate studies and a career as a music professor.
