Musical Snakes and Ladders
This game has been a huge hit with young children. It’s almost like tricking them into doing the more mundane and repetitive activities that go along with learning the guitar. Memorizing chord shapes and building muscle memory of changing between them is essential. Rather than just repeating these which can be like pulling teeth, I like to create a race.
Each tile on the snakes and ladders game is a different chord. Kids are given a 30 second timer to make it as many spaces as they can. I will compete with them just by rolling a dice. They almost always win as they can hit the ladders as they wish and just like that we’ve done some boring muscle work and made it fun. See the lesson attachment below for a print out of a simple beginner version.
